French Antique Butterfly Redwork Open Cutwork Doily Linen Cotton Silk - 1

French Antique Butterfly Redwork Open Cutwork Doily Linen Cotton Silk

$166.63

This is an antique French redwork square linen doily, tray cloth, or handkerchief with a butterfly motif. It features 12 butterflies connected by continuous dots within a scalloped rim, created with open cutwork eyelet embroidery and a beautiful vibrant crimson color. The butterflies are arranged in different directions, with eyelets forming their wing patterns, eyes, and antennae, and bridge embroidery on their bodies. The hand embroidery is meticulously done stitch by stitch with lustrous red thread. The fabric has a smooth, dry feel with an elegant sheen, reminiscent of crisp chirimen-like crepe with an uneven surface, possibly a cretonne fabric. The threads are of uneven fineness, medium-fine and slightly thin. The material feels like cotton & linen, or possibly a silk blend. The dimensions are 12.05 inches x 12.01 inches, and it weighs 25g. The needlework is neat even from the back. There are no scratches, severely noticeable stains, or repair marks, indicating a very good condition. It has been professionally cleaned by a French specialist and is in a clean state. As an old handmade item, please excuse any minor overlooked imperfections that do not interfere with its use beyond what is described. The size is versatile for various spaces, such as cabinets, chests, tables, or under a vase with flowers. It can also brighten a space when adorned with bisque dolls, mignonettes, or stuffed animals.
