Mission Swirl

This is a large ceramic jar/vase of authentic nerikomi/marbleware (agateware) type, made by intricately layering multiple colors of ceramic clay itself, such as ocher, reddish-brown, and bluish-gray. The layered colored clay is densely visible even in the scraped parts of the bottom and foot, indicating a very elaborate creation. The flowing marble pattern from the side to the bottom shows a rich and completely different expression depending on the viewing angle. The colors and nerikomi texture show high technical characteristics common to agateware, such as the “Mission Swirl” of Niloak Pottery, famous as American vintage art pottery. With a height of approximately 12.20 inches, it has an overwhelming presence and is a very striking item not only as a vase but also as an ornament/object that becomes the centerpiece of an interior. It goes well with discerning rooms and spaces such as American vintage, mid-century, retro modern, folk art, and store fixtures. The approximate dimensions are: height: about 12.20 inches, mouth diameter (outer diameter): about 8.86 inches, bottom diameter: about 7.09 inches. As a vintage and stored item, it shows fine scuffs, small scratches, surface damage due to age and storage, and irregularities and linear marks (kiln marks/mold seams) from manufacturing. Please understand the texture and history as an old ceramic and consider it after thoroughly checking the photos (especially the bottom and foot parts). No inscription or mark is confirmed on the bottom. The manufacturer, kiln, country of manufacture, and age are unknown, including Niloak Pottery. It is not asserted to be Niloak-made but is described as an example of similar techniques and designs.
