Kuniaki Kuroki

Born 1945 · Aya, Miyazaki

Miyazaki glass artist who runs Glass Art Kuroki in Aya and was the first glassmaker named a Contemporary Master Craftsman.

Kuniaki Kuroki was born in 1945 in Miyazaki Prefecture. After finishing high school there he joined a glass manufacturer in Tokyo, beginning his career in glass. He later returned to Miyazaki and leads Glass Art Kuroki, a studio and showroom in the town of Aya. In 1991 he became the first glass artist to be honoured as a Contemporary Master Craftsman, and he later received the Medal with Yellow Ribbon. His work applies Japanese decorative traditions to glass; his Kōrin series, inlaid with gold and platinum, draws on the Rimpa school. In 2008 an exhibition of around 100 of his works was held in Venice.
